Preparing for a Career in Technology

Preparing for a Career in Technology

Its officially Fall! Leaves are beginning to change from green to an array of auburn, copper and orange; the excitement of Halloween is just around the corner, midterms and finals are unfortunately looming and if you haven’t already secured your flight home for Thanksgiving… well… that’ll be an awkward conversation for you and your parents.

For the Minnesota State IT Center of Excellence, Fall also marks the start of industry events, conferences, workshops and training opportunities. Last week, some of you may have taken part in the Twin Cities Startup Week and BITCON conferences. If you didn’t attend either of the conferences, we encourage you to take advantage of the FREE to low cost Student access to conferences such as these. They are excellent opportunities for students to learn about emerging products, services and careers in technology. Subscribe to our IT Connect Community to receive local industry news, events and career opportunities.

As the information technology industry evolves, it is ever more important for students to align their degree-focus to a desired position, role, function.  By the time you graduate you should be prepared and ready to enter the workforce. Being career ready doesn’t just mean having the technical knowledge and skills needed to be successful. You should also have the soft skills (critical thinking, communications, teamwork,, leadership, work ethic, etc) to grow professionally.
