Metropolitan State University wins the 2017 Minnesota Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition

Congratulations to all Minnesota State teams that participated in the 2017 Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (CCDC).

Advance IT Minnesota is happy to announce that for the first time Metropolitan State University has captured the Minnesota CCDC title for 2017!  Last year’s winner St. Cloud State University finished second this year, and Century College finished third. Each of the top three finishers will receive their award at the Secure 360 Conference on May 17th.

As in past years, it was a great learning and practice experience for all. Throughout the day-long event, ethical hackers from local organizations and businesses attempt to attack each student team’s network and score each college on a number of cyber defense competencies.  The competition was intense with the teams needing to manage their secure environment while also handling a series of simulated business needs and requests thrown their way.

The Minnesota CCDC, in its 12th year, uses a controlled, competitive environment to assess students’ capabilities in protecting a business network while under attack.

This year’s event on February 4th included seven teams from Alexandria Tech and Community College, Century College, Lake Superior College, Metropolitan State University, Minnesota State Community and Technical College, Minnesota State University – Mankato, and St. Cloud State University.

As in past years, Advance IT Minnesota and the Minnesota Cyber Careers Consortium (MNC3), a network of industry leaders and educators, were the organizers for this event, with hosting and assistance provided by Alexandria Technical and Community College and Minneapolis Community and Technical College.

Nationally, the Center for Systems Security and Information Assurance (CSSIA) in Illinois leads this annual competition, and Metropolitan State University as the state winner will now go on to compete at the Mid-West Regionals on March 17th-18th. The winner of the Mid-West Regionals will advance to the National Championship April 13-15th in San Antonio, TX.

Congratulations Metropolitan State University on your CCDC victory, and good luck at Regionals!
