Data Derby Competition Online Event
Instead of the face-to-face presentations on April 18th, we will be collecting video submissions of your
presentations through YouTube until April 7th.
After the judge team evaluate all the submissions, the top 3 teams from each level will be selected and notified on April 16th. On April 17th, we will host a Zoom meeting with all the participants to determine the 1st, 2nd and 3rd places for each level. Below are details for video submissions:
• Each team will make a video recording their presentation and submit the video to YouTube by 5pm on April 7th . Zoom is a great choice of recording a team presentation.
• Faculty advisors can set up a Zoom meeting and help to record the presentation video for the team but faculty advisors are not supposed to participate in the presentation.
• When making your video—important points:
Please do not include any warm-up in the video o Please only speak to the presentation, no other talking between students or between students and the faculty advisor. Please limit background noise
Please show presentation slides in the video while talking. o Please limit your presentation video to 10 minutes for Beginner Levels, and 15 minutes for Advanced Levels o Please introduce the team member(s) with just the first name(s) at the beginning of the presentation
Please upload your presentation video to YouTube. If you are the first time YouTube user, you will need to create an account. Uploading can be from either the faculty advisor or students.
When uploading your video:
Mark your video as unlisted to the YouTube platform
Title: Data Derby 2021, Team Name, Level (either Beginner or Advanced) o No faculty advisor identification nor institution identification anywhere in the video
Tags: none o Privacy settings: change to “unlisted”
Disable all comments and responses (All boxes under Comments and Responses must be unchecked)

• Please verify that your link works and you include the entire presentation in the video. Incomplete presentations and incorrect links may result in exclusion from the competition.
• Please email the following to email@example.com by 5pm April 7th:
• Team Name
• Participation Level
• Faculty Advisor Name and Email
• Link to your YouTube video
• Please limit to one email per team submission
• Please keep your video available on YouTube until at least April 20th. Below are details of the online event on April 17th:
• Prior to April 187th, the judge team will determine the top 3 teams for each level based on the video submissions and the judging rubrics that you received
• The top 3 teams at each level will be notified on April 16th . • A Zoom meeting will be called to every participant at 10am on April 17th .
• From 10am to 10:30am,faculty will provide a brief introduction to the data and context
• From 10:30am to 12pm, the top 3 teams at each level will make their presentations to the whole audience over Zoom.
• At 12:30pm, another Zoom meeting will be called to every participant to announce the 1 st, 2nd and 3rd places at each level.

PLEASE USE CAUTION WITHIN YOUR TEAMS TO ENSURE YOU ARE ALSO PRACTICING SOCIAL DISTANCING AND USE FREE CONFERENCING TOOLS TO WORK TOGETHER ON YOUR PRESENTATIONS.

WE ARE STILL WORKING ON THE STRUCTURE OF THE PRESENTATIONS AND EVENT OVERALL SO PLEASE ALLOW US A FEW WEEKS TO FIGURE THAT OUT. ALL COMMUICATIONS WILL BE THROUGH EMAIL MOVING FORWARD!
The theme of this year’s competition is the analytics of NASA AND NOAA DATA
Students will form a team of 1-5. There are two divisions of the competition: Novice and Experienced levels. Students in one team should be at the same level. An example of experienced level could be students with two or more of the following experiences: having taken or currently taking an upper division statistics course, having taken or currently taking a machine learning course, coding statistical routines in a programming language, relevant internship/job, or at graduate level in relevant field.
Data Derby Minnesota
Students (undergraduate and graduate) from all Minnesota colleges and universities enrolled in any major, and especially from information technology, computer science, management information systems, business/management, mathematics, and statistics-related programs. Basically anyone with a passion for being a data detective!
Beginning in March student teams gain access to the questions and datasets. Teams have 5 weeks to work on a comprehensive data story addressing all challenge questions. Teams are premitted to use additional, freely accessible datasets of their choosing. On the day of the Data Derby, your team will present your data story to industry experts and faculty members serving as judges.
Access to the Datathon challenge questions and instructions to download the data sets will be emailed to registered participants on March 12th. Contact Dr. Janice Aanenson at firstname.lastname@example.org if you do not receive this in time.
The Data Derby challenge events provide opportunities to showcase your ability to address data challenges as you see fit. Programming or SQL knowledge is helpful but not essential to winning in the Data Derby. You may use any use any openly available tool or application including:
- Statistical packages
- Common programming language (such as Java, Python, R, and SQL)
- Visualization tools (such as Tableau, R, and SAP) packages
- Common Office Productivity Tools (such as Microsoft Office Suite)
Interested in serving as a judge?
Data science and analytics professionals are invited to serve as judges and have first-hand access to top talent across Minnesota. Educators may contribute use this as a professional development opportunity and contribute as judges (you may serve as a judge even if you are a team faculty advocate since you’d be recused from judging team (s) from your institution).
