Minnesota Data Derby Competition

A valuable learning experience for students interested in data, math, or analytics.

The Data Derby competition provides students with valuable hands-on learning experiences, helps organizations solve real-world problems, and contributes to advancing data science techniques. Join as a team to compete to solve specific data-related problems using data analytic techniques and analysis.

Time: 8 am to 4 pm

Location: Hennepin Technical College - Eden Prairie

Datagon Competition

Datagon is a one-day competition on April 20th. This year, the competition will be in the form of a debate.

  • Team must be 2 to 4 participants

  • Each team member needs to register themselves

Datathon Competition

This is a four to five-week competition where students analyze data and find solutions to questions. Teams will present their analysis on April 20th.

Schedule for Data Derby
April 20th

7:30 am - 8:30 am: Registration

8:30 am - 9:00 am: Breakfast/coffee and network

9:00 am - 9:15 am: Opening introduction to Datagon

9:15 am - 10:45 am: Datagon debate competition

10:45 am - 11 am: Break and top team announcement

11:00 am - 11:30 am: Datagon top team debate

11:30 am - 12:30 pm: Lunch and prep for Datathon

12:30 pm - 3:00 pm: Datathon Competition

3:00 pm - 3:15 pm: Break

3:15 pm - 3:30 pm: Awards and Closing

Who can compete?

Any student with a passion for being a data detective. Students who want to pursue a career using data but are unsure if it is right for them.

Open to all students who are the following:

  • Minnesota high-school

  • undergraduate

  • graduate

Students who have the following degrees:

  • information technology

  • computer science

  • management information systems

  • business/management

  • mathematics

  • all degrees that use data analytics

What skills are necessary?

You can address data challenges in any way you know how. Programming or SQL knowledge is helpful but optional to win. Any openly available tool or application is allowed, including:

  • Spreadsheets

  • Statistical Packages

  • Common Programming Languages (such as Java, Python, and SQL)

  • Visualization tools (such as Tableau and SAP) packages

  • Common Office Productivity Tools (such as Microsoft Office Suite)

How does the competition work?

Competitions start with the release of a real world societal problem. This problem needs to be solved using the the information within the dataset(s) provided for analysis, and the evaluation criteria for the solutions.

After four weeks, participants submit their solutions to judges through a presentation.

Gain valuable hands-on learning experiences, help organizations solve real-world problems, and contribute to the advancement of machine learning and data science techniques, all while networking and enhancing your resume.
