Even though the past few weeks have felt like fall and there are some trees starting to turn colors, the MN State IT Center of Excellence is still in the “Summer Fun and Get Things Done” mode. As many of you may know we had a busy summer with faculty projects, student boot camps and trainings, and next year’s planning. We barely get done with our ‘old’ work and the ‘new’ work is upon us.
We spent the whole month of June creating a vibrant and robust schedule of events that enhance student learning, faculty engagement, and program success. Currently there are 17 events planned in 2019 and 2020 for faculty and students with more being added every week.
CAREER READINESS LUNCH & LEARN Join us at your college for one of 4 Career Readiness Lunch and Learns scheduled for September and October! If you are interested in attending or hosting your own campus career readiness lunch and learns, let us know!
More information can be found at: https://itconnect.workoutloud.com/Events/All-Events.
This fall we are also offering three faculty specific technology trainings you will not want to miss.
- GITHUB Taught by Pawel Buta of South Central College, this 6 hour training focuses on using GITHUB in your courses. GitHub is a development platform inspired by the way you work. From open source to business, you can host and review code, manage projects, and build software alongside 40 million developers! (https://github.com/)
November 2nd, 2019 9am-4pm at the MN State ITCOE Training Center
- AGILE IN THE CLASSROOM Taught by the Agile Faculty Development Team (Mary Lebens, Roger Finnegan, David Bahn, Amos Olagunju, Pat Paulson and Sarah Endel) these two opportunies for training sessions explore using Agile methods and tools in the classroom. These are important assets to offer our students and for faculty to use within the classroom as Agile and Dev Ops are highly coveted employee skills within many IT organizations.
Friday November 8th, 2019 12:30pm -3pm Virtual Course
Friday December 6th, 2019 1pm-5pm & Saturday December 7th 8am-3pm
- Student Bootcamps This summer we held two successful boot camps. One camp covered our cyber security students and the other our data science and analytic students. Each was well received and all of the students left wanting more opportunities to learn. Our CSi Bootcamp included in-depth Security + and PENTEST Certification training for 32 Minnesota State Students. Our expert instructors, Sahar Ismail and Chris Schulze, led students through over 40 hours of training and preparation that will enable all student participants to sit for one of the COMPTIA Exams! Our Data Bootcamp helped 11 students from across Minnesota learn and work hands-on with JMP and SAS data analytic software tools. From determining housing market activities to determining how fitness data can shape your health, the group discovered and explored it all!
- Summer Curriculum Development With our Curriculum Development Deadline fast approaching we have made huge steps in getting closer to launching the data and cyber curriculum development modules across the State. Right now we have over 30 data modules and 10 cyber modules in the final stages of D2L loading and we will be sharing them with you in late Fall! With the help of Karen LaPlant, Retired Faculty from Hennepin Technical College and Curriculum Developer, and our faculty leads (Faisal Kalem, Vickie McLain, Wei Wei, Jack Pope, Rajeev Bukralia) we have made great progress in getting the work created by over 40 faculty ready for implementation! All modules will be available in D2L this Fall!
As you can see it has been a busy summer of planning and we really hope we see many of you this Fall as we move our mission forward to stay on top of the future of IT as we develop new ways to teach, learn, and connect with the people of Minnesota.
